Take product photos that reduce returns

Use practical product photography to set expectations clearly and help customers choose the right item.

Photos are part of customer support

Good photos do more than make a product look attractive. They answer questions before a customer asks them. They show scale, texture, packaging, included parts, color, and any details that affect fit or use.

Returns often happen when the received product does not match the mental picture created by the listing. Clear photos lower that risk because customers can see what they are getting before they buy.

Recommended photo set

  1. Start with a clean main image that shows only the product, centered and well lit.
  2. Add a scale photo with a hand, common object, or measurement reference when size matters.
  3. Show close-ups of texture, labels, controls, connectors, seams, or finish.
  4. Show what arrives in the package, including accessories or required pieces.
  5. For variants, include one photo per variant and label the variant names consistently.
  6. If the product has limitations, show them honestly instead of hiding them.

Quality checklist before publishing

  • Images are sharp at product-page size.
  • Colors are accurate and not heavily filtered.
  • No unrelated props make the included items confusing.
  • The first image is strong enough for search and collection cards.
  • Mobile preview does not crop away the most important detail.
